What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin (BTC) is a digital currency that works without a bank or central authority. It was introduced in 2009 by a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto.

The blockchain

Every Bitcoin transaction is recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain. Thousands of computers around the world keep copies of it and agree on which transactions are valid, which makes records very hard to alter.

Mining and limited supply

New bitcoin is created through mining, where computers compete to add the next block of transactions. The total supply is capped at 21 million coins, and the reward for mining new blocks is cut roughly every four years in an event called the halving.

Wallets and ownership

You hold bitcoin in a wallet controlled by private keys. Whoever has the keys controls the coins. Read our guide to crypto wallets.

Why the price moves so much

Bitcoin's price is driven by supply and demand, news, regulation and investor sentiment. It can rise or fall by double digits in a short time, so it is a high-risk asset. Never invest money you cannot afford to lose. See the live Bitcoin price.
