How to read a crypto price chart

Charts show how a coin's price has changed over time. Here are the basics, which you can practise on any coin page on this site.

Timeframes

A 24-hour chart shows short-term moves; 7-day and 1-month charts show trends; a 1-year chart shows the bigger picture. The same coin can look like it is rising or falling depending on the timeframe you choose.

Price vs market cap

A coin's price alone does not tell you its size. Market capitalisation is the price multiplied by the circulating supply, and is a better way to compare coins.

Volume

Trading volume is the value traded in the last 24 hours. High volume usually means a coin is easier to buy and sell.

Highs and lows

The 24-hour high and low show the range the price has moved in. The all-time high shows the peak price in the coin's history.

A word of caution

Charts describe the past, not the future. No pattern can predict crypto prices reliably. Try the DCA calculator to see how regular buying would have worked out.
